Hiring an interior designer for your home build or renovation has become a widespread experience. In the past interior designers were a prerogative of the wealthy families but in this day and age there's a big variety of different interior design packages you can choose from that will match your needs and budget.
But what are the benefits and does it really worth it if you already have lots of ideas on your own from Pinterest?
Lets take a look at several different aspects where having an interior designer on your side will help you achieve the best result for your space, style and budget; will prevent pricy re-dos; save time, money and stress.
1. Your builder or contractor is going to require your exact plan
for each square foot of the house.
Your Pinterest board is a very helpful and wonderful thing when you come to a designer but when you will be talking with your builder or contractor there's a totally different language that they use: how many millimetres off the wall will go your sink, exact placement of each GPO (power point), exact depth of the tile in each of the bathrooms, and the list goes on and questions get only harder. And all of that has to be decided before the team comes in otherwise you will have to pay extra charges to move GPO even 10cm if you chose a bigger nightstand or plumbing pipe if any bathroom fixture you have ordered differ in size from what you guessed earlier. "We will figure it out as we go" - is a very expensive attitude at the construction site. An interior designer will go with you through all these items and prepare plans and elevations for your construction team.
2. There's a world of difference between
"Builder Grade House" and "Custom Designed Interiors"
"Builder-Grade House" means use of the most standard, materials, light fixtures, plumbing fixtures and most common solutions to cover the considerable part of market demand, see also "Cookie-Cutter". Even if your builder is going to give advices on your interiors he is not going to spend hours working out the best solutions for your lifestyle. Whereas when you hear "Custom Designed Interior" you think of a more personalised spaces, of a more unique design and detail-oriented design solutions to function better for the family that is living there.
3. Interior Designer is a full-time job
Professional interior designers receive formal education and training. After that they usually gain experience in a design firm. So we're talking about years of their lives turning around interior design, trends, different materials, kitchen fittings, plumbing fixtures, hardware, brands and suppliers, 3d renders and construction drawings.
4. 3D renders
And the most obvious reason is to help you visualise your space. 3D renderings either schematic or photorealistic will help you to understand the volume of the space, big masses and small accents, proportions and ratio of different materials. We build everything in 3D before building it in the real-life - 3D walkthroughs and 3D renderings will help you to land on the perfect choice and for the functionality, and for the visual look, making your new home exactly what you wanted it to be!
If you're building a home or planing to renovate and wandering what the process of working with an interior designer looks like, here's an outline:
01 Initial 20-minute Introductory Call During our Introductory Call we will get to know you/your project, details and specifics of your project. Discuss your vision and hopes for the space, budget, time-frame and other organisational moments. After which you will receive a fixed fee Design Proposal outlining project scope with breakdown of all details, phases and timetable. 02 Project Briefing During Project Briefing meeting we will sign the Design Agreement, get the sense of space either through the walkthrough or via architectural floor plans, discuss in detail design-questionnaire to make sure to address all items on your wish-list, your style, improve the flow of the space and achieve the outcome that will perfectly accommodate your lifestyle goals. 03 Concept Design You will be presented with an overall Interior Design Concept for your space, which will include preliminary layout options, concept board with initial ideas to make sure we're on the same page about the design direction, feel and look you're after. 04 Design Development We refine layouts into the final one and develop it in 3D. You will receive a 3D video walkthrough to feel the space in dimensions. Here, we focus on details - everything is tailored to your exact needs - furniture pieces, appliances, lighting, power points, custom furniture, storage detailing down to pots and cutlery. 05 3D Renderings Once the space is shaping up into a representation of your dream abode, we will create high quality, photorealistic 3D renderings to help you visualise colours, materials, lighting in volume. 06 Material Selection Materials take a crutial part in determining not only the look of a space but how we will feel in it as well. While there's a great abundance of alternatives in different materials on the market it might be tricky to land on a right choice for your lifestyle and space. In this phase of the project you will be presented with different options for your flooring, walls, cabinets, benchtops, splashback etc. Knowing pros and cons of each material and seeing physical samples will help you to make an informed decision that you will enjoy for years to come. 07 Design Documentation Once the 3D model have been approved I prepare a full set of design documentation required for construction. It will include floor plans, elevations, lighting plans, joinery design and FF&E Schedules with all details about materials, furniture, lighting fixtures and appliances used in the project. With all that you're fully ready to start the build.
