Interior Design Trends 2023

Updated: Apr 12, 2023

Now that we’re back from Christmas/summer holidays time to focus and plan for the year ahead. If you’re going to start renovation project this year you’re probably interested what interior design trends that you’ve seen all over Instagram and Pinterest are going to stick around, what’s going to retire, and what new waves are coming in.

Please remember while you’re reading about interior design trends 2023 here and elsewhere that it’s not recommended to follow them blindly or you will regret it with the new trends approaching the next year or even season. Design trends of the year is just a direction that you can take if it correlates with your own personal aesthetics, lifestyle, and your home’s unique configuration, location and maybe history.

So the biggest trend is natural materials.

Which is great because it stands the test of time. Stones - like marbles, travertine, limestone, etc; wood - wood flooring, wood furniture, wood decor; handmade zellige tiles, organic fabrics, clay homeware and warm metal accents.

Now, very import is the texture of these materials - we’re looking for that organic natural feel as shiny finishes are being absolutely replaced by raw, highly textured, honed finishes. Natural materials can cost more but if you’d like to incorporate that organic textural feel without breaking the bank think about accent features in your home, like a splash-back or upper cabinets, a vanity or a fireplace wall.

Now let’s talk about colours.

So there are actually a few colour palettes that are particularly in trend right now but you will see now that they are quite interrelated. So there’s a monochromatic palette with this sort of an overall colour that envelopes the room. Muted, warm, blush light colours with just slight difference in hues or tones. Then there’s again a neutral colour palette but with bold monochromatic accents whether it’s in the art on the wall or a statement decor piece, or a coffee table. And there’s a more fun and adventurous palette which found it’s way into a smaller spaces of our homes where don’t spend that much time and won’t get tired of it, like a powder room or a scullery. It can be moody, rich and dark colours encompassing the room like stepping into another world. Or it can be some playful and daring focal point. Could be in a vibrant colour panel or statement marble with lots of veining and movement.

Statements and feature pieces.

So feature walls are out. Accent walls become more subtle. And instead there appear feature pieces and elements. Bold, thick marble benchtops; splash-backs with contrasting dynamic veining; all black sprawling coffee table; massive bold dark one colour artwork, a monumental black vase or a décor piece.

And of course the shapes!

The whole interior design idea now is about personality and uniqueness of the space which primarily is demonstrated in forms and shapes due to subtle elegance of nude colour palette. Fluid, amorphous, curvy furniture and walls bring harmonious flow between the spaces and areas. Solid wide floor boards are now oversized more than ever before again to make a subtle statement in otherwise neutral and calming interior. Ribbed glass in the doors and cabinets; reeded, fluted and scalloped details bring some some dynamic and interest. Arches, curved corners and rounded joinery soften up spaces as well. Cozy nooks for reading or studying/working from home are becoming increasingly popular.

And last but definitely not least - decor.

With decor as well there a couple of directions you can choose from depending on what is closer to your personality. Dark bold massive statement pieces as an opportunity to add contrast or natural warm organic that brings an interest through its scale, shape and texture. Speaking of texture - textured art is making its way through our homes. Which adds a focal point or simply covers a bald spot on the wall and keeps it livelier. You can even DIY or commission it in a style and size that works for you.

Overall vibe comparing to previous most popular design trends.

All white kitchens have lost its interest. Sterile white, grey and shiny interiors have completely become a thing of the past. But there’s a way to spruce it up. Incorporate some earthy colours in walls, wood tones in facades of the cabinets, raw thick wooden shelf, or add natural warm decor.
